We begin with the belief that transformative and sustainable change in schools and districts is grounded in an effective Instructional Infrastructure (curriculum, assessments, data systems and collaboration structures) and the ability to fully leverage it by building capacity in areas such as: high-impact leadership; effective use of data to drive quality instruction; effective action planning (e.g. 90-day plans, teacher action plans); resource allocation; and, talent management (developing and retaining high-quality individuals and teams).
To this end, we offer the following services and supports to schools and/or districts separately or in combination customized to meet each partner’s specific needs.
We typically begin each collaboration by conducting a needs assessment to gain a more accurate understanding of our partner’s specific needs and challenges. Through this process, we help our partners assess the effectiveness of their current leadership and instructional strategies, practices, initiatives and instructional infrastructure and use this information to identify focus areas to leverage for improvement. The information and data gathered during this needs assessment allows us to customize our support, training, resources and tools to meet our partners’ specific needs.
Based on the needs assessment, we:
High quality instruction ultimately relies on each instructor’s ability to comprehend and actively deliver the district and state curriculum in a manner that engages and challenges all students. An effective and comprehensive curriculum helps to ensure that every instructor has access to the resources necessary to plan, deliver and assess high-quality instruction and that every student has access to a quality education.
In order to fully maximize a comprehensive curriculum, it must be implemented in combination with an aligned assessment strategy. An effective assessment strategy provides teachers and leaders with the data required to determine student progress, effective instructional practices, and the alignment between classroom instruction and the district curriculum.
Because Bedrock believes that a comprehensive curriculum combined with an effective assessment strategy is foundational to our partners’ success and on-going improvement, we provide the following:
Curriculum Review - Analysis and assessment of the current curriculum to determine whether it includes a clearly stated, thoroughly unpacked scope and sequence of K-12 learning objectives aligned to state and national standards.
Curriculum Development - Development and delivery of a comprehensive curriculum including clearly stated, thoroughly unpacked scope and sequence of K-12 learning objectives customized to be aligned to your specific state expectations. This may also include ongoing revisions and updates as needed.
Curriculum Implementation - Support and training to help ensure that leaders and teachers are better prepared to effectively implement the curriculum, and understand how it is interconnected to other integral components such as assessments, data, collaboration structures, coaching and PD. (Because of Bedrock’s belief in the critical importance of a high-quality, comprehensive curriculum and that effective implementation is key to success, support and training is always included when Bedrock provides curriculum development and delivery to our partners).
Assessment Strategy Review - Analysis of the current assessment strategy to ensure it provides teachers and leaders with the data necessary to inform instructional effectiveness and student achievement.
Assessment Strategy Development - Collaboration with partners to co-develop an assessment strategy to ensure that teachers and leaders have the data required to identify student needs, monitor student progress, develop effective instructional practices, assess the alignment between instruction and curriculum, and identify targeted professional development needs.
Curriculum and Assessment Alignment - Analysis of curriculum and assessment to ensure that they are effectively aligned and integrated with data and collaboration structures to provide teachers and leaders with a high-quality and effective instructional infrastructure.
Effective, data-informed instruction and decision-making requires easy access to real-time, cross-sectional and longitudinal school, teacher and student data as well as ensuring that teachers and leaders have the technical support, and data-literacy training necessary to analyze and use data effectively. This includes providing teacher teams with common structured meeting time so they have uninterrupted time to: reflect on practice; develop expertise; share promising practices; plan instruction; analyze and discuss data; increase instructional efficiency; and, ensure instructional equity. These meetings are most effective when structured well and informed by student data and work samples.
Bedrock’s experience and expertise in this area is grounded in, co-founder and partner, Michael Kight’s work with teachers and leaders in over 300 schools, 100 districts and 18 states. These collaborations with urban and rural districts in elementary, middle and high schools have resulted in, on average, double-digit gains in student proficiency over a period of 18-24 months. Prior to helping launch Bedrock Partners, Mike served as Director and Chief of Data for the University of Virginia’s Darden/Curry Partnership for Leaders in Education. Prior to that Mike served as middle school principal in Richmond, VA where he implemented changes to data and collaboration structures resulting in student proficiency rates rising from 45-50% to 97% across all grades, sub-groups and subject areas.
With Mike’s support, guidance and oversight, Bedrock provides the following services to help ensure that our partners’ data and collaboration structures and practices are utilized as effectively as possible:
Data System Analysis - Analysis of the current data system to ensure it provides leaders and teachers with the necessary data in an organized format that allows them to make data-informed decisions. Depending on system capabilities, Bedrock will work with partners to help determine how the current system can best be leveraged to be used more effectively and options available to address system shortfalls.
Data Training and Coaching - Provide teachers and leaders with coaching and training necessary for establishing the protocols for identifying and analyzing relevant data to: determine student and teacher needs; deliver data-informed, differentiated instruction; implement targeted interventions for students and PD for teachers; monitor progress towards achieving identified goals; and strategically allocate resources.
Establishing Collaboration Structures - Help leaders develop and implement processes and structures to provide teacher teams with time to reflect on practice, develop expertise, plan instruction, analyze and discuss data, improve instructional quality and efficiency, and ensure instructional equity on a consistent basis.
Implementing Collaboration Structures - Provide training to help teachers effectively use collaborative time and structures to share, analyze and discuss data, identify student needs, plan instruction and necessary interventions, monitor student progress, and develop action plans as needed to drive consistently high-quality instruction.
Data and Collaboration Structure Alignment - Analysis to ensure to the district’s and school’s curriculum and assessment strategies are effectively aligned and integrated with data and collaboration structures to provide teachers and leaders with a high-quality and effective instructional infrastructure.
Observation and Feedback Structures - Provide training to district, school, and instructional leaders for improving the observation and feedback systems in individual schools and across the district. To be effective, these systems must include structures for improving both instruction in the classroom and the district instructional infrastructure.
Unlike typical professional development and executive education that offer one size fits all type programs on pre-determined topics, Bedrock works jointly with partners to identify underlying needs and the long-term goals of our partners. We then respond to the unique needs of each of our partners by designing and delivering programs customized to help teachers and leaders develop the competencies, skills, knowledge and tools to address their most significant challenges. We also provide follow-up support to help our partners implement new learning and build capacity for long-term success and sustainability.
Bedrock accomplishes this with the support of our network of world-class faculty from some of the most prestigious business and education schools in the country as well as practitioners with proven records of success. More specifically, Bedrock emphasizes the following:
Collaborating with leaders to identify, develop and deliver executive education sessions designed to develop leadership competencies, improve organizational effectiveness, and establish practices and processes to help build the internal capacity necessary to initiate change and sustain success. In any profession, people, who receive support from effective coaches and/or mentors to help them develop a strong foundation, are more likely to succeed and remain invested in their career choice.
